Belarus protests: Authorities detain students during rally in Minsk

Belarusian authorities detained university students on Tuesday during a rally demanding the resignation of Belarus President Alexander Lukashenko following an election that was denounced by the opposition for being undemocratic.

Hundreds of students boycotted the start of the school year in Belarus on Tuesday, answering a call from exiled opposition figure Sviatlana Tsikhanouskaya to demand new elections and keep the pressure on President Alexander Lukashenko to resign.

Lukashenko, who has run the ex-Soviet nation of 9.5 million for 26 years, has dismissed protesters as Western puppets, and had characterized calls for his removal as a power grab.
