The Best Pizza in the World: Sally's or Pepe's?

On Wooster Street in New Haven sits Pepe's and Sally's. Frank Pepe established Pepe's in 1925. Frank's nephew Sal established Sally's in 1938. Both feature coal fired ovens that result in a pizza with the world famous crispy, yet chewy crust.

Dining in, Sally's is about half the size of Pepe's inside, so the intimate pizza ambiance with the coal fired oven front and center is slightly more intimate than Pepe's.

Results of the take out comparison is that Sally's has the essential crisp like Pepe's, a more subtle chewy factor than Pepe's, a little less mass than Pepe's, but a little more articulation of the ingredients than Pepe's.

My Barstool Sports, Dave Portnoy type scores for Pepe's and Sally's are super close.

I will do this comparison again as we all should. If you are dining in at the New Haven locations, my recommendation is to try slightly off hours. They both fill up fast and usually have a line form outside. Take out is always easy though. If you are like me, you order take out in person to minimize any chance it sits there. They actually have someone take your order outside of the restaurant if you do take out like that and will give you a time estimate which usually ranges from 10 - 20 minutes.
