Berlin Radio Tower: IFA Home Appliance Trade Show Road Trip Episode 6, Fernsehturm, Funkturm

This morning, I’m at the @IFABerlinHub in Berlin, and since I arrived early, I took the chance to visit the Berlin Communications Tower. It's an impressive structure, standing around 150 meters tall, and thanks to my trade pass, I was able to go up for free. The tower is fully insulated and rests on porcelain mounts. Now let me tell you the brief history of this radio tower;

The *Berlin Radio Tower* or *Funkturm* is a historic landmark with a fascinating story. Built between 1924 and 1926, the 150-meter (492-foot) tall structure was initially designed as a broadcasting tower for radio signals. What’s unique about the tower is that it wasn't just built for practical purposes, it was also conceived as a tourist attraction, offering a spectacular view over Berlin.

Nicknamed the *Langer Lulatsch* which translates to *Tall Lad* , the Funkturm quickly became a beloved symbol of the city. It was designed by architect Heinrich Straumer, inspired by the Eiffel Tower in Paris. Made of steel, it weighed about 600 metric tons and featured an observation deck and a restaurant at 55 meters (180 feet), where visitors could enjoy views of the sprawling city while dining.

One remarkable fact about the Funkturm is its insulative base. It stands on porcelain insulators, which was a groundbreaking design at the time, allowing it to transmit radio waves without interference from the ground. The tower played an essential role in radio broadcasts in the late 1920s, eventually transmitting television signals in the 1930s.

During World War II, the tower was damaged, like much of Berlin, but it was repaired and continued to serve as a radio and television broadcasting hub after the war. Despite the construction of much taller and more modern towers, the Berlin Radio Tower remains a significant historical monument. Its unique blend of architectural beauty, engineering innovation, and its place in broadcasting history makes it an enduring symbol of Berlin’s technological progress.

Today, as you can see on my video, the Funkturm still stands tall in Berlin, and its observation deck remains a popular spot for tourists and locals alike, offering a nostalgic view into the city's past and present.

*I highly recommend you come here and see the city from a bird's-eye view and enjoy the landscape.*
