The Intertwined Lives and Careers of Stephen A. Douglas and Abraham Lincoln

Stephen A. Douglas biographer, Reg Ankrom, on the large role Douglas had in the development of the United States west of the Mississippi, and how his career was so intertwined with that of Abraham Lincoln.

Ankrom is writing a three volume biography of Douglas. As this was recorded, the first volume is already published and the second volume is now at the publishers and soon to be published.

And as this interview --- the full length runs over one hour -- was recorded in July 2020, a national effort by many seeks to remove statues of many historic figures, as their lives run counter to many of the political beliefs of today. But is judging historical figures by the standards of 2020, fair? Are we erasing our history or distorting the history of the American people, by suggesting that those who were historic figures, must now also be in compliance with current political beliefs?

As the portrait of Stephen A. Douglas and his statue to be removed from the Illinois State Capitol House Chamber, we offer this portion of our much longer interview, for the consideration of those who in 2020, weigh these questions of historical significance vs historical character.
