Replace Lightfoot, Preckwinkle, Foxx, Evans & Dart to stop crime?

May 27, 2022:

Public Affairs show host Jeff Berkowitz interviews Bob Fioretti on how to stop violent crimes in Chicago and Cook County. Fioretti, a former two-term Chicago Alderman, is a possible appointment by Cook County and Chicago GOP to be their candidate to take on Toni Preckwinkle in her November 2022 bid for a 4th term as Cook Country Board President.

Preckwinkle, in terms of political power, is the Pharaoh with a capital P.

Berkowitz and Fioretti make clear that to reduce violent crimes sharply in Chicago and Cook County, we must treat criminals as criminals, not as victims.

That means Chicago needs a mayor who articulates that philosophy about fighting crime. And the actions of Mayor Lightfoot demonstrate she lacks that belief and ability.

Similarly, it is likely that Cook County needs: a County Board President other than Preckwinkle, a State’s Attorney other than Kim Foxx, a Chief Judge other than Tim Evans and a sheriff other than Tom Dart.

In short, Lightfoot, Preckwinkle, Foxx, Evans and Dart don’t act as if they believe in the pro-active, constitutional policing that is necessary to reduce violent crimes dramatically.

They won’t pursue a unified law enforcement approach to dealing with violent crime that involves rigorous and vigorous investigation of crime by police, arrest of criminals when probable cause is established, detention in jail (not bonding out) of those arrested for violent crimes when their history, pattern of behavior and other evidence presented in court shows them to be a danger to society, vigorous prosecution of the accused by the State’s Attorney, stiff sentencing w/o probation and parole when the evidence and circumstances warrant that, and confinement in prison in accord with those sentences.

And, both Berkowitz and Fioretti agree that all of the above can and should be done in the context of on-going reform that provides for legal and constitutional policing.

Berkowitz emphasizes that we don’t need to be WOK, but we need De-WOK reform, similar to the de-regulation reform that has invigorated America for decades.

Further, Fioretti highlights the importance of clean and safe communities for kids to grow up in with respect for property and others in their community, so they can become responsible, adult members of civil society.

Berkowitz and Fioretti also discuss the Wirepoints data demonstrating that only a quarter of all CPS students are learning how to read at grade level. Moreover, for Blacks, it is only 15% who read at grade level and for Hispanics, it is only 21%.

Additionally, Berkowitz and Fioretti discuss how the failure of CPS to teach kids how to read contributes to kids joining gangs and the sharp increase in violent crimes in Chicago.

Finally, Fioretti highlights the importance of (a) helping those in prison acquire education and vocational skills and (b) making sure ex-offenders get a 2nd chance from employers and society and can acquire jobs as a way to reduce recidivism.
