IL Rep Charlie Meier (R) Warns of Soaring Electricity Costs, Blackouts
Illinois State Capitol, May 26, 2022: In a legislative hearing at the Illinois State Capitol on May 26th, lawmakers heard arguments put forth by Ameren of Illinois on their request to raise rates to consumers for electricity. Ameren Illinois does not produce the electricity but does deliver it to consumers across the majority of the Central and Southern Illinois regions.
The costs are going up for a number of reason -- many tied to the effort at the federal and state level to close down electrical plants which use fossil fuels -- coal and natural gas. Coal and natural gas are used to boil water which creates steam. The steam is then used to turn turbines which produces electricity. This method has changed little over the last 120 years, but there have been great advancements made to clean pollutants from the burning of coal. Natural gas has replaced a number of coal-fired power plants, and it is not only cleaner than coal, but is rather inexpensive - like coal is.
But as Rep Charlie Meier points out this War on Fossil fuels - as part of the push to have wind and solar become a major source of electrical energy production, is forcing the closure of fossil fuel plants, and that is driving up the cost of electricity as well as leaving the state without enough electrical power being produced to meet the needs. This is largely due to the fact that wind and solar are NOT "always on" sources of power. When the sun goes down, the solar powered electricity goes off. This is not the case with fossil fuels which can keep the grid powered 24 hours a day, 365 days a year -- and do so at an affordable cost to consumers.
