Potatoes in Ecuador - 350 VARIETIES & 4 Potato Dishes to Try | Where to Eat in Quito
Potatoes in Ecuador are a thing of amazement. There are so many varieties grown in the Andes. A trip to a market in Ecuador and you're faced with a plethora of options. There's an entire row devoted to the tuber and each stand has impressive stacks. As a lover of food, I needed to know more about Ecuadorian potatoes. After all, the potato is the third most important crop in the world. Without it, people might starve. But in Ecuador, where you can grown almost any kind of staple food you'd want, the potato isn't as important for feeding the people. Instead it's a complex ingredient. The potato you use differs according to what dish you are making. I guess this means I need to eat a lot of potato dishes in this video.
First up, we grabbed a bowl of Locro de Papa, a potato cheese stew. This thick creamy stew is made by boiling potatoes until they're super soft and infused with the water. You add milk and cheese, which creams up the soup even more. Served with a hunk of avocado with some cheese sprinkled on top. The version I got in the market also came with some dried blood, which added an incredible richness. I usually eat locro de papa when I get the menu of the day. It's common for it to be the soup included with the meal. I love it for its heartiness.
We also got a bowl of cuero con papa (leather with potatoes). This is an indigenous dish that was created when the Spanish came over and tossed the pig skin - literally the skin of the pig. The indigenous people took it, boiled it until it was tender and then cooked potatoes in the broth. The modern day version of the dish adds some milk and some peanut paste to make it extra creamy. Eating pig skin is a bit much, but this is a pretty tasty dish.
One of my favorite parts about living in Ecuador is the beautiful weather. What better to spend a perfect day than in one of Quito's many parks? We headed to Parque La Carolina (Carolina Park) to watch people picnic, and play sports. It seems as though Ecuadorians would rather be active than sit at home. We watched a game of Ecuavolley, the Ecuadorian version of volleyball, and we found a stand to try the infamous salchipapas, fries with a deep fried hotdog wiener. Smothered in ketchup and mayo, this snack is, well it's not good for you, but that doesn't mean it isn't delicious. Abuse your body with some today!
Our last stop is a place that serves tortillas, emapanades, and tamales. We ordered a couple coffees and a potato tamale. This is essentially a mashed potato with cheese wrapped in a leaf and covered in a sweet pulled pork and a half of a quail's egg. To die for. Even after a day of eating potatoes, I scarfed it down.
