Amazing $5 meals in the World’s most Expensive City // Singapore Eats
Singapore’s Maxwell Food Hawker Centre - Breakfast, Lunch & Dinner
A huge part of traveling is food, and Singapore has some of the best food in the world. A visit to the Maxwell Food Centre is the only proof you need. This is street food in Singapore. It’s filled with amazing hawker stalls, which are run by incredible cooks, some of which have been making the same dish for many years perfecting its ingredients and its flavours. Every time I go to Singapore, I visit Maxwell Food Centre - but this time I chose to have breakfast, lunch, and dinner there. It was an awesome experience - one of the most delicious days ever!
Maxwell is conveniently located in Chinatown, a popular area for tourists to stay. The exact address is 1 Kadayanallur Street, but the centre fills an entire block. Rows upon rows of stalls serving Chinese food, Thai food, Indian food, Malaysian food, even western food. My 3 square meals included: a fish, chicken, and century egg congee for breakfast from Zhen Zhen Porridge ($4); the famous Tian Tian Hainanese Chicken Rice for lunch ($5); and for dinner I shared a few plates with friends - Hong Kong style roasted pork (char siu) with chow mein noodles from Fu Shun Shao La Mian Jia ($5), a deep fried pastry filled with oysters from Fuzhou Oyster Cake ($2), and a seafood medley with rice cakes (similar to a hor fun) from Shanghai Tim Sum ($5). Everything was incredible, but the chicken rice at Tian Tian Hainanese Chicken Rice is a must-try in Singapore. It’s a very famous dish, and for good reason.
What I love about Singapore is that Chinese food from all over China can be found here. As a person who lives in China, I sometimes find it frustrating that the cuisine is so localized. In Sichuan, it’s hard to find Hainanese food for example. Singapore and it’s food hawker centres are a best-of album of Asian food.
Love food? Tune in Thursdays at around 3PM EST for my series Chengdu: City of Gastronomy (https://goo.gl/kSSxw2), where I randomly pick a card that has a Sichuan dish on it and I hit the city to find it and try it. There's so much good food in Chengdu, Asia's first ever city to be named a UNESCO City of Gastronomy.
I also post new videos from my travels and from my home in China on Tuesdays at 3PM EST.
