Spats - GOTTA TELL YA ALL ABOUT IT, BABY (Gold Star Studios) (1965)

NO COPYRIGHT INFRINGEMENT INTENDED - (ABC Paramount 10640) A double dose of Gold Star magic as both sides of this disc, 'GOTTA TELL YA ALL ABOUT IT, BABY' and BILLY, THE BLUE GRASSHOPPER' are top notch, mid 1960's L.A. musical finery.
Active in the recording biz for about three years between July 1964 and April 1967, the Spats were vocally led by Dick Johnson. The debut disc for the group appeared on the Enith label before they signed with ABC Paramount which resulted in five singles and an album. A final two discs featuring the group were released on Jano Records in 1967. The Spats were produced by Norman Malkin and Jack Hoffman on all of their records and Wrecking Crew bassist, Ray Pohlman arranged for the group in 1964 and 1965. Hailing from Garden Grove, California while attending Santiago High School, brothers Dick, Bud and Ron Johnson were the core of the group having performed prior as the Nomads, the Temptations and the Dick Johnson sextet. Known for being very sharp dressers, the band spotted a pair of spats while out shopping for stage wear which would eventually become their trademark and band name. The Spats performed often at Disneyland and were the first group to appear on the elevator stage for the grand opening of the new Tomorrowland Terrace in 1967. Along with recording and performing at clubs and venues, the Spats appeared on many television shows including, 'American Bandstand', 'Shindig!' , 'Shebang', and the Andy Williams special, 'Love, Andy'. They were also in an episode of TV's, 'My Mother the Car'.
The band would eventually break up in in late 1968 due to so many of its members being drafted into the military.
