DOES THIS MAKE SENSE??
It’s one thing if you’re super discipled and manage to “eat your bodyweight in protein every day” and do so through a very structured diet, which delivers protein with as little fat and carbohydrate as possible… AND your run your ass off and train hard in the gym…
But even in a typical “balanced diet” with big emphasis on protein, protein only accounts for maybe 30% (on the high end) of total calories consumed.
Say for example you wanted to get 180 grams of protein in a day and you wanted to do this in a healthy balanced diet… if that 180 grams accounted for 30% of daily calories, that would mean you’re allotted 67 grams fat (25%) and 270 grams carbohydrate (45%).
Just doing this takes a lot of work and discipline…
For example, in the average American diet, protein only accounts for 15-16%, while fat accounts for 33-35% and carbohydrate accounts to 49-50%.
Doubling protein in the average American diet is already a big hurtle that requires a lot of disciple… and I’m saying most people do this by just by eating more… which doesn’t actually bump protein up to 30%.
Think of that guy or gal in your office who is overweight but slams a protein shake every day… that one friend who is always busting out protein snacks… their strategy just seems to be more protein, not less fat and carbohydrate, and those calories are almost certainly not being offset by a commensurate amount of physical output… even if they WERE over that first hurtle.
This could be just my experience, but what I’ve seen from most people who talk a lot about protein is just eating more and not working out more.
If you really wanted to increase protein, I would say do it in a bulk if you are dedicated to fitness… but if not, don’t bother… because it’s almost guaranteed you will gain weight if you don’t train your ass off everyday and we are not strictly talking about lean protein.
If you are overweight, CERTAINLY don’t bother. First order of business should be trimming the fat. Running and hiking everyday and LESS total calories.
Am I wrong about this? Is the obsession over getting enough protein NOT one of the reasons people struggle to lose weight?
