John Thomson es un fotógrafo notable. Fue uno de los primeros fotógrafos en viajar al Lejano Oriente, documentando las personas, los paisajes y los objetos de las culturas orientales. Se instaló en Hong Kong en 1868 y desde allí realizó varios viajes, cuatro en particular, por las regiones costeras de China incluida la isla de Formosa (Taiwán) y también por el interior, hasta llegar a Beijing.

During the Qing dynasty, Manchu style clothing was only required for scholar-official elite such as the Eight Banners members and Han men serving as government officials. For women's clothing, Manchu and Han fashions of clothing coexisted. Throughout the Qing dynasty, Han women continued to wear clothing from Ming dynasty.

전족(缠足)의 풍습이 시작된 것은 송나라 때인 10세기 초반부터라고 전해지며 17세기 만주족이 중국을 정복한 후 이 풍습을 폐지하려고 하였으나 실패하였고, 청나라에 이르러 만주족이 한족 여자들을 중심으로 한 전족 풍습을 금지시켰으나. 그러나었으며 1949년 중화인민공화국이 수립되고 나서 강력한 전족 금지 법령을 만들어 반포했는데 이 법령은 현재도 유효하다.

Some of the places in China where Thomson made his portraits have changed their name to something else entirely (Amoy is now Xiamen) and at other times the pinyin transliteration is different from the spelling that used to be used in the 19th century (Foochow-Fuzhou , Swatow-Shantou, Hankow-Hankou, Ningpo-Ningbo, Nanking-Nanjing, Peking-Beijing).
