Be What You Are - Staples Singers - 1973

Be What You Are, was written by Homer Banks, Raymond Jackson, and Carl Hampton and given to the Staples Singers to record during a massive seven day recording session in Muscle Shoals rather than at Stax. Hampton wanted Mavis Staples to sing lead on it but Banks and Pops Staples wanted Pops to sing lead. Mavis deferred to her dad since the song structure fit his relaxed vocal range and didn't put alot of strain on his voice. The result was a Grammy nomination for, Be What You Are, even though the single only peaked at #20 on the Cash Box chart, week ending 7/7/73.
