Fair Isle through a lens - Episode 34

A series aiming to give a virtual tour of the U.K.'s most remote, inhabited island - Fair Isle. Join me, Rachel, as I guide you round the sights and locations of the island that has been my home for the last five years. I hope to share with you the stunning scenery of the isle and a look at life here.

Episode 34 - Harvesting the Oats, Part 2

A shorter episode than usual but I thought you might like the see the harvesting of the second strip of oats (Black Oats). In a different location to the first oats you saw us harvesting in Episode 30, these oats did not fare so well - the oats themselves were very tapered from bottom to top and also the amount of grass that grew in amongst the oats meant that the tractor really struggled to cut them mechanically. Luckily, Neil came to the rescue with his scythe and the oats were cut by hand, exactly as they would have been a hundred or more years ago.

Once cut and bound into sheaves, six sheaves would then be stacked to form stooks - arranged in a 'tent' shape to allow the wind to blow through them, rather than blow them over! Leftover sheaves were added to some of the stooks, hence why some have a few more than the usual six.

The music used in this episode is by the wonderful 'Fridarey', from their album 'Across the Waters' and features the songs:

- Da Sang O Da Papa Men
- Hello Auld Boat
- Swedish Angel
