Heathkit Hero Junior Rebuild Part 1: Drive Systems
I bought a Hero Jr that lacked electronics, and in this video I start the process of installing modern electronics. I've always wanted to do something like this, but 1) I sold my own Hero Jr years ago, and 2) If I did still own it, then I could probably never bring myself to disassemble it. But then I came across this Jr where someone had already removed the electronics, so I figured "Why Not?". In this video I take a look at the drive system, the stepper motor for direction and the DC motor for drive. There's also an encoding for detecting movement and some limit switches. I build a power/motor board using an ATMEGA328, control it with a raspberry pi. I power it with a custom-built 4S3P lithium battery pack. For more electronics projects, see http://www.smbaker.com/
