Titan Missile Museum: Battery Power

The Titan II missile, and everything required to launch it, operated on 28 volts DC. This meant the missile could launch on battery power alone, if worse came to worst. Level 3 houses a pair of 28-volt DC power supplies that powered much of the equipment needed for a launch. If these power supplies failed, or if commercial power was lost, electric power would have been supplied by two large battery power supplies located adjacent to the main power supplies. These used nickel-cadmium batteries and were analogous to the uninterruptible power supplies used today in many homes and businesses. In the best case, the battery power supplies would have been required only for the minute or two it would have taken for the emergency generator to come on line.
