Titan Missile Museum: Blast Dampers
Blast dampers were between blast doors 8 and 9, and allowed air to flow in only one direction: from the Launch Control Center to the silo equipment area. Air flow from the LCC provided fresh air for the cableways and prevented toxic vapors and/or smoke from moving out of the silo toward the blast lock and LCC. In a nuclear attack or chemical explosion of the missile, shockwaves would push the blast dampers closed, protecting the crew. The dampers could also be closed from the LCC side of blast door 8.
