Behind the Scenes of Titan II "Part 13 – Decontamination"

On our way back out of the missile silo, we stop by the decontamination area. The propellent used to hurl the 330,000 lbs (loaded) Titan II missile 6,000 miles was Aerozine 50 (fuel) and nitrogen tetroxide (oxidizer). The advantage of this propellent was they could be stored on the missile for an immediate launch. One disadvantage was it was extremely toxic. Handling the propellent was a labor intensive duty that required extensive safety procedures, including wearing unairconditioned rubberized suits in 100° Arizona summers. Follow along for a new episode next #Titan2sday as we explore the home of the ultimate weapon at the front lines of the Cold War.
