Bass cover - Maceo Parker / Shake Everything You've Got
In my opinion, Maceo Parker's epic live masterpiece from 1992, Life on Planet Groove, is one of the best live funk albums ever recorded. It features the legendary horns of Maceo, Fred Wesley and Pee Wee Ellis, supported by incredible players like drummer Kenwood Dennard, guitarist Rodney Jones, Candy Dulfer on sax, Larry Goldings on organ, Vincent Henry on bass and sax, and Kym Mazelle on vocals. The whole album is an explosion of phenomenal musicianship, and it's the 16-minute opening track, Life on Planet Groove, which kickstarts and sums up the whole beautiful thing. It starts with a devastating funk groove, before segueing into a brutal drum and sax breakdown from Kenwood and Maceo, then everyone comes back in for a joyous ending. It's a phenomenal tune to listen to and play along with, and there's lots of room for adding your own improvisations and noodly bits. Hope you enjoy it as much as I did. I decided against recording the whole 16-minute version, by the way, so I could kick back and enjoy the rest of the song.
(PS I realised listening back I occasionally hit an open string in the middle of the bass groove, which is annoying! Something for me to work on anyway...)

ABOUT GUY'S BASS CHANNEL
These bass covers aren't designed to be exact copies of the originals.
They're just a bunch of songs I've loved learning and playing over the years.
The bassline I play is always pretty close to the original, but each one is my interpretation, so they do feature the occasional tweak.
Hopefully you'll enjoy them, particularly if you're learning to play bass and they help you to do that.
Please subscribe if you like them. Also feel free to leave a comment!
