This is a very common question that gets asked to us whether ultrasound is safe for the baby or not and the simple answer is yes. The current ultrasound machines that we are using have inbuilt mechanisms so that the ultrasound wave that we use are absolutely safe to the baby. The normal number of scans that a woman has to go through during pregnancy really depends upon whether the mother has any high risk factors or not. But usually a bare minimum of 3 to 4 scans are done during the entire duration of pregnancy right from looking at the baby’s heartbeat, till the scan which tells us about the baby’s weight towards the end. These scans are done at various times in pregnancy, so that it gives us different information at each stage of pregnancy. So we would say yes, a usual of 3 to 4 scans in every pregnancy is routine for any woman. The earliest scan is what we call as the viability scan, which will tell us about the baby’s heart beat the next important scan which is done at the end of the first trimester is the NT scan, where we look for specific genetic abnormalities in the baby. The most important scan is around 18 weeks of pregnancy, where we look at the baby’s structuring detail and after that there is 1 or 2 scans which are done specifically to look at the baby’s weight and overall well-being of the baby. So these are the number of scans that are usually done in a pregnancy.
