The village of San Martino al Cimino sees its origin around the 13th century, when an abbey was built in the locality, which rises about 560 meters above sea level by the Cistercian monks of Pontigny.

In the following centuries, the village experienced a notable urban, demographic and economic expansion thanks to the involvement of Olimpia Maidalchini, better known as Donna Olimpia, widow of the Marquis Pamphilio Pamphilj and sister-in-law of Pope Innocent X, from whom she had the title of Princess of San Martino al Cimino.

Donna Olimpia entrusted the architectural restructuring of the village to Borromini; he took care of the works on the Cistercian abbey and, in turn, entrusted the military architect Marc'Antonio de Rossi with the design of the perimeter walls, doors and houses as well as other civil buildings.

The realization is defined as an ante litteram urban planning experiment: the builders of the court palace were the same ones who then bought the rented houses, built hand-hand around it: the first examples of planned construction.

The houses, leaning against each other, housed the subjects within the village which was equipped with everything they needed (shops, taverns, organized entertainment).

The princess had exempted her subjects from paying taxes, she wanted to be liked by creating around her a large crowd of subjects, to the point of establishing a dowry for the girls who after marriage had chosen to stay in the country.

Inside the 17th century Palazzo Doria-Pamphili, it is possible to see a real rarity, in fact the coffered ceiling of the bedroom of Olimpia Maidalchini, has a particularity common only to two other palaces in Europe......which is that it can be lowered through a system of pulleys, to reduce the total volume of the room, favoring its heating.

Also of architectural interest are the characteristic terraced houses built inside the boundary wall, which represent the first known example of a "home to own"
