The town lyes on the Etruscan Falisca plain. On the territory there was a castle, perched on the high tuff wall that rises from the valley below. The origins date back to the Etruscans who inhabited the area, whose vestiges can be recognized on the sheer walls overlooking the valley.

When the Romans conquered the Etruscan settlement, they built a temple dedicated to their goddess, Diana, just as the Etruscans did to their God Falacro, right in the valley where the Basilica of St. Elia was built a few centuries later. Of the medieval village, which once had to be well protected by a castle and perimeter walls, very little remains, except for a stump of a tower, everything has been transformed over time.

During the Medieval era, the town, in addition to being led by the Church, belonged to various families including the Orsini, in 1379, following the donation made to it by Clement VIII, and to the Farnese under the guidance of Pier Luigi who included it in the duchy of Castro.

As was the custom of the Farnese family, new buildings and large towers were erected at Castel S. Elia, of which some stumps remain. The landscape is extraordinary, a territory furrowed by deep ravines that alternate with large plains, partly cultivated and partly pasture.
It is considered one of the most beautiful town of the Tuscia area.

Around 520 a.D. Saint Anastasio of Suppentonia, notary of the Roman curia, founded a monastery there. At the beginning of the 11th century, the abbot Elia built the basilica which was mentioned, among others, by Pope Gregory VII in 1076, by Alexander III in 1176, by Pope Innocent III in 1211.

In 1607 the fall of a rock from the cliff damaged the left side wall: the repair was carried out by the Farnese who owned the basilica between 1540 and 1649.
In 1740 a period of decline began for San'Elia caused by the opening of the new parish church of Sant'Antonio Abate which it ended only under the pontificate of Pope Pius IX, when the architect Vespignani began its restoration.
