Hurricane Hilary aims for Los Angeles after attacking Baja California, Mexico.

Hurricane Hilary swirled north off the coast of Mexico's Baja California Peninsula. The hurricane was accompanied by strong winds, intense rain and flooding. Catastrophic and life-threatening flooding is likely across a wide region of the US Southwest.

Hilary had a maximum sustained wind speed of 215 km/h (135 mph). Destruction and damage to buildings, roads and infrastructure were widely recorded. The hurricane transitioned from Category 4 to a tropical storm as it approached the coast of the peninsula.

The authorities carried out operational measures to evacuate the population from danger zones. The hurricane caused floods, strong streams of water demolished everything in its path. Thousands of homes suffered damage, and electricity and communications were disrupted.
The storm swept about 350 km (220 miles) south-southeast of San Diego.
