Gasoline prices in the US don’t follow one simple pattern. Instead, the country breaks down into several distinct pricing clusters, each shaped by geography, policy, and long-term infrastructure choices.

At the top are the usual suspects — places like Hawaii and California. In Hawaii, fuel has to travel long distances, which pushes prices up from the start. In California, supply is tighter and fuel rules are stricter. When something goes wrong, prices jump fast… and they don’t really come back down.

Then come the West Coast and remote states — Washington, Oregon, Alaska, Nevada. Not as extreme, but still expensive. Fewer refineries, longer transport routes, and limited alternatives keep prices elevated most of the year.

The Northeast sits in its own category. States like New York, Pennsylvania, Massachusetts, Vermont don’t lack supply, but taxes, dense cities, and constant demand push prices up anyway. You’re paying for location and convenience.

Move inward, and things calm down. The Midwest and Mountain states tend to hover closer to the middle. Fuel moves efficiently, distances are manageable, and prices feel… normal.

And then there’s the cheap fuel zone — Texas, Oklahoma, Louisiana, Mississippi, and neighbors. Fuel is produced, refined, and moved locally, so what you see at the pump is about as low as it gets in the US.

What’s interesting is that this isn’t about who’s rich or poor. Two states can have similar incomes, but very different gas prices — purely because of how fuel flows.
