Getting fired in Spain, Italy, the UK #career #uk #spain #italy #londonlife #london #milan #madrid

Firing—one word that sounds simple, until you actually go through it. Let’s see how three countries might respond when they hear, ‘You’re fired.’

🇬🇧 United Kingdom: Redundancy and tribunals
In the UK, dismissal often means statutory redundancy pay if you’ve been around for 2+ years. Notice periods run up to 12 weeks, and unfair dismissal claims can end up in tribunal — with over 30,000 cases filed last year alone. Employers usually settle before it gets that far, but the ritual of “redundancy pay, tea break, tribunal” is practically a stereotype.

🇮🇹 Italy: Appeals forever
Italy has some of the strongest job protection laws in Europe. Even after reforms, courts can still reinstate workers, and cases often drag on for years. Employees accrue severance (TFR) by law, and appeals can stretch so long that bosses retire before cases are resolved. For many, dismissal isn’t an ending — it’s the start of a very long legal journey.

🇪🇸 Spain: Formula and finality
In Spain, firing comes with a calculator. Unfair dismissal? That’s 33 days of pay per year worked, capped at 24 months. Economic dismissals are 20 days per year. Employers often budget for payouts in advance, and while strikes or union action can flare up, many cases end with a simple settlement. The process may be bureaucratic, but at least the math is clear.

📌 These are broad patterns — sometimes firings happen much smoother, harsher, or somewhere in between.
