SpaceX's Raptor 4 is Totally Ahead of Time...Starship is About To Make History!
This is the engine that could rewrite everything we know about space exploration: SpaceX’s Raptor 4.
And it’s not just because it’s the most powerful rocket engine on Earth. It’s because it shatters a century of conventional wisdom on how rocket engines should be designed and built.
Even more impressive, Raptor 4 is engineered for a goal no engine has truly enabled before — making human trips to Mars a reality.
So what makes it so extraordinary? Let’s dive in.
We’ve just passed a full century of liquid rocket engines.
Back on March 16, 1926, in Massachusetts, American scientist Robert H. Goddard successfully designed, built, and fired the first engine powered by gasoline and liquid oxygen. That moment changed everything. It laid the foundation for modern rocketry, and inspired generations of engines that followed.

Since then, a few icons have defined the field.
There was the F1 engine on Saturn 5, incredibly powerful and reliable, the machine that helped carry humans to the Moon. Then the RS25 engine of the Space Shuttle, which supported hundreds of missions and played a key role in building the ISS. And of course, Russia’s RD170 and RD180, known for their raw performance.
But here’s the reality. Almost all of them came with serious, sometimes fatal tradeoffs.
Take the F1. It was powerful, yes. But it was expendable, used once and discarded. It was also massive, extremely complex, and carried high risks due to combustion instability.
What about the RS25? Reusable, sure. But it earned another title, the most expensive rocket engine ever built, at around 146 million dollars per unit.
And the RD series? For the United States, the problem wasn’t performance. It was dependence. In 2022, Russia halted engine supplies, forcing rockets like Antares from Northrop Grumman and Atlas 5 from United Launch Alliance to face cancellations and urgent replacements.
Now, what if I told you there’s an engine that could solve all of those weaknesses?

Sounds bold, right?
That engine is Raptor, developed by SpaceX.
Right now, they’re pushing new versions at an incredible pace, roughly every one to two years. The latest version today is Raptor 3. It hasn’t even flown yet. And already, they’re working on the next step, Raptor 4.
This isn’t speculation. It’s been confirmed twice by Elon Musk.
The first time, he said Raptor 4 could beat Merlin by more than ten times in cost per ton of thrust, with further improvements in thrust to weight ratio and specific impulse.
Then later, he made it even clearer. Each Raptor 4 engine is expected to produce around 300 metric tons of thrust. Multiply that by 33 engines, and you’re looking at a staggering 10,000 tons of total thrust.
You might be wondering, why rush new versions this fast?
Is there something bigger going on behind the scenes?
Maybe.
