How Under Armour is helping CrossFit® Games athlete James Newbury prep, train, and recover for competition.
Mastery (noun): Comprehensive knowledge or skill in a subject or accomplishment.
Every elite athlete is a on a path to mastery.
In James Newbury's case, his craft is CrossFit, and mastery means conquering his mind, pushing his body physically, and discovering new personal limits.

In the rolling hills of Portland, Oregon, you'll find Under Armour's massive 70,000 square foot PDX campus. The campus has a fully equipped gym with all of the latest gear, an athlete-centered recovery room, and a beautiful outdoor turf track.
Instead of simply giving athletes gear, the Under Armour Athlete Performance Team makes it their mission to provide elite athletes with experiences and tools to improve their performance.
Every elite athlete, like James Newbury who is a 3x CrossFit Games athlete, already have their own systems in place, and the UA Athlete Performance Team accommodates for this and tries to fill in potential gaps in how an athlete is currently prepping for competition, training, and recovering on a daily basis.

We were lucky enough to be invited out to spend a week with the UA Athlete Performance Team as they helped Newbury peak for the CrossFit Games.
It was remarkable to see how much volume, intensity, and planning goes into Newbury's training. Whether it was a 50-mile bike ride, a 90-minute lift, or a 45-minute swim, every detail was accounted for and planned accordingly.
It's one thing to hear about the training that an athlete at Newbury's caliber goes through, but it's another to physically see it, document it, and even partake in it.
What may have been the most notable part of the week spent in Portland is that the UA Team doesn't just help instruct athletes, they physically train with them. To say the UA team cares about their athletes would be an understatement.
So what all went down during Newbury's insane week of training?
