Canon 300mm f4L IS Review + Sample Images & Video
Today we're reviewing the Canon 300mm f/4L IS USM lens. It's an excellent telephoto lens for Canon Digital SLRs. Here are the quick specs:
300mm on full frame
480mm on APS-C
Max Aperture: f/4
Min Aperture: f/32
Minimum Focus Distance (MFD): 1.5m
1:4 magnification ratio
The 300mm f/4L IS features top-notch L lens build quality. The exterior is all metal. It features a nice metal nameplate.
Here's some sample video footage. This is handheld with IS. Handholding a heavy lens at 300mm is usually very shaky, but the Image Stabilizer does a good job here.
Here are some shots with the Canon 300mm f/4L IS. This dog was running really fast and was pretty close to me, so it took me a while to get a keeper like this. Surprisingly, the autofocus was struggling to keep up, but the dog was going really fast. Not sure if this was my 5D Mark III's fault, or the lens's.
The 300mm f4L IS can also be used for bird photography. This is on full frame, but I did crop the image. 300mm can actually be viable for bird photos if you're pretty close to the birds, and especially if you're using a crop sensor.
One of my favorite uses for the 300 f4 is sports photography. Recently I shot a few youth baseball games with this lens, and it's a blast to use. Autofocus is fast and reliable, image quality is superb, and the reach on full frame is perfect. If you shoot a sport where you need more reach, using this lens on a crop sensor camera would probably do the trick. So these are just a few of my favorite shots I've taken so far with this lens.
So that just about wraps it up. If you're looking for a good telephoto lens, the 300mm f/4L is an excellent choice. It provides good reach on full frame, and a very nice 480mm on APS-C. The f/4 aperture is wide enough to get good backgrounds, without making the lens really heavy like the 2.8 version. The image quality is superb, and AF is snappy and accurate. If you shoot sports, wildlife, or anything else that requires a lot of reach, overall, the 300mm f/4L IS is an excellent value.
