Teleconverters | MUST-HAVE or WASTE of MONEY? Are you better off cropping?

Buy a teleconverter & double your focal length! Sounds amazing, but is that what we should be doing? Lately I have been working with teleconverters even on zoom lenses, something I have always said one shouldn't do! Has the game changed and we can use extenders on all lenses now?
