Tropical Storm Yutu is strengthening in the Western Pacific, and could become the next major typhoon as it swipes the northern Mariana islands later this week. The storm is expected to ultimately recurve, but could also seriously affect some of the offshore Japanese islands as it does so. Typhoon Watches are in effect for Saipan, and a direct hit there cannot be ruled out.
