Ann Wilson of Heart and Mike Reno of Loverboy tell the story behind “Almost Paradise” the smash hit duet from the 1984 blockbuster film “Footloose” starring Kevin Bacon. Almost Paradise was one of three number one hits from the 9 million selling Footloose Soundtrack, helping it become one of only 5 albums to hit the number one spot in 1984, the fewest total in history. with music written by Eric Carmen and lyrics by Dean Pitchford. Almost Paradise went to #7 on the billboard hot 100 and it went to #1 on the AC charts. Professor of Rock has interviewed both Ann Wilson and Mike Reno and this is the story from both of their perspectives, his including a cameo from legendary crooner Johnny Mathis.

Today we dive back into the 80s and break down the love theme from Footloose the Kevin Bacon blockbuster from 1984. Beautifully sung by Ann Wilson of Heart and Mike Reno of Loverboy with music written by Eric Carmen and lyrics by Dean Pitchford. Almost Paradise went to #7 on the billboard hot 100 in the summer of 84. It also went to #1 on the AC charts. It was one of 3 top ten hits from the multiplatinum Footloose soundtrack album, the other two went to #1 Footloose the title track by Kenny Loggins and Let’s Hear It For the Boy by Deniece Williams. We have the story of both of those from Kenny and Deniece that will be part of our premium content, sign up for that below. Anyway. Footloose was such a massive movie and soundtrack in 1984. You have to remember, only 5 albums went to #1 in 1984, the fewest for any year in the history of popular music. The reason being was that this was the year that Prince Purple Rain was #1 for 22 weeks, Micheal Jackson Thriller was still burning hot as it spent 15 weeks at the top well over a year after it was first released. Bruce Springsteen spent 4 weeks at the top with Born in the USA, Huey Lewis snuck in for 1 week with Sports and Footloose was #1 for 10 weeks. The soundtrack for Footloose eventually sold 9 million copies making it one of the biggest soundtracks ever. I had a chance to interview both Ann Wilson and Mike Reno about this and here’s the story from both of their perspectives:
