#VanHalen #80s #HardRock

1985 was a strange year for Van Halen. After the 24 hour a day party tour supporting their diamond selling album, the brilliant 1984, the band had kicked around the idea of taking a year off after nonstop touring for every album since the 70s. Despite Van Halen’s massive success, a creative fracture was becoming ever so large when It came to the partnership between the dynamic lead singer, Diamond Dave and Genius EVH. DLR wanted to continue the party that had made the band popular. He wanted to do covers or develop songs around the tried and true formula of sex drug and more sex and more drugs.

Eddie was more interested in evolving, he wanted to explore deeper compositions in minor keys, similar to what the band had done one their LP Fair Warning . They had been a dangerous duo on their first 3 records along with 1984, but Diver Down saw Eddie sacrificing his own creative output sacrificed for 5 cover songs, 3 of which were singles. Dancing in the Street, Pretty Woman and Where Have All the Good times gone . After building a brand new recording studio in his home with their trusted recording engineer Don Landee, Eddie was ready to protect his creative freedom and do what he wanted.

There was a story that appeared in the july 1984 issue of Rolling Stone saying that Dave had quit the band, Angelus said that drummer Alex Van Halen told him that the band wasn’t going to wait around for DLR to make his movie. Early 85 rolled around and things weren’t looking good. Roth released his solo EP Crazy From the HEAT in late January 1985, a four-song collection of covers. Then in February, he was quoted as saying “We’ll be going back in the studio and start arguing again and we all look forward to that. … We have a lot of respect for each other and get along quite well, actually.” Only at that point, they weren’t getting along period Apparently DLR and EVH met that March to go over the future of the band and DLR had the balls to ask if Eddie would compose the score for his Movie. Eddie said NO

Now it should be noted the Van Halen brothers fired their manager, Noel Monk, in April 1985, despite desperate pleas from Roth to keep Monk on board. With no intermediary between Roth and the brothers, things quickly fell apart. With no glue keeping the egos in check, there was no hope of Eddie and Roth reconciling. So Van Halen really broke up in March of 85. Later that summer, Rolling Stones began to report that the band was on hold and were even possibly looking for a new singer.
