Take On Me by A ha | In Depth Story of 80s Classic | The New Standards | Professor of Rock

Norway’s most iconic band, A-ha, comprised of lead singer Morten Harket, keyboardist, Magne Furuholmen and guitarist Pal Waaktaar-Savoy wrote the perfect pop song in the 1985 #1 hit “Take On Me” but the road to that success was full of bumps and potholes. This is the story of its rise from the ashes and its domination to change music and pop culture forever. This is the story of the little song that could from the song to the music video.

The title of the song “Take On Me” by Aha, Norway’s most successful musical export, may be grammatically incorrect, but it was one of the most beloved of the New Wave Era, and has become a New Pop Standard. To use proper English, the title of the song, and it's chorus, should have been “Take Me On”, but it wouldn’t have sounded as cool, and probably a little stuffy. It’s like Paul Simon said when asked by Dick Cavett why in the classic song Mrs. Robinson, Simon used Joe Dimaggio instead of a current baseball start like Mickey Mantle. Simon replied "It's about syllables, Dick. It's about how many beats there are.

A-ha already had a tough time fitting the chorus into the song’s irresistible melody, and with all the pleasure that ‘feel good’ ditty has given us, we grant them leniency. Besides…Rock and Roll is all about slang and lingo, not proper grammar.
“Take On Me" was repeatedly tweaked in three recording sessions over 3 years.

“Take On Me” was co-written by A-ha lead singer Morten Harket, keyboardist , Magne Furuholmen and guitarist Pal Waaktaar-Savoy, was the primary lyricist of “Take On Me”, as he was on most of the songs included for the A-ha album Hunting High and Low.

“Take On Me” evolved from rough drafts of songs with the titles “Miss Eerie” and “Panorama” which Pal and Mags began scripting when they were still teenagers. Mags invented an infectious keyboard melody in ’78, and formatted the groove into a synthesizer riff for “Take On Me" while he and Paul were members of Bridges- a Doors influenced group that preceded A-ha. The original version of “Take On Me" was released in ’82, under the title “Lesson One”.

They blamed the futility of “Take Me On” (’84) on what Morten Harket called a “half-hearted effort” by their record company.
When Mags first played Morten the melody for “Take On Me”, he instantly believed it was the sound that was going to change his life. There was no way “Take On Me” was going to end up in the “songs that shoulda been a hit” file.

Harket & his bandmates give undying gratitude to Warner Brothers International Vice President Andrew Wickham for rescuing “Take On Me", recognizing the track's enormous potential, not to mention the marketability of A-Ha, when he signed the group to Warner Brothers America.
