Hi, I’m Amy North. As one of youtube’s top dating coaches for women, I know just how valuable a compliment can be, especially for men.

I know they may seem strong, secure, and like they need no validation but the truth is, that’s just what they want you to think.

In reality, heartfelt and thoughtful compliments are key to male self esteem. And because men don’t receive compliments as frequently as women, any compliments you give him will be extra special. But at the same time, since men aren’t complimented as much, many men don’t know how to take a compliment. They might deflect it, get flustered, or just shrug it off. Trust me when I say that inside he’s really pleased, even if he can’t show it.

I find that compliments break down into five categories and to keep your man happy and fulfilled, you need to make sure that you’re hitting all five of these regularly. The categories are emotional, physical, value, competence, and effort. You’ll see that most compliments fit into a few categories at once. I’ll explain more as we dive into the list, starting with #1:

“I love the way you make me feel”

This is definitely an emotional compliment but it also fits into the area of an effort compliment as you’re praising him for making an effort, i.e. doing something to make you feel good.

This compliment is powerful because it gets at the heart of what’s most important to men. That is being valuable to you by making you happy. Men love to be providers and while the modern world is less about men going out to make money while women stay home, cook, clean and raise the kids, men still have a primal desire to provide for the women they care about. In today’s dating market this is all about providing happiness, humour, and stability. Not to mention an orgasm or two. This means that by letting him know that you love the way he makes you feel, you’re letting him know that he’s valuable to you and you’re very grateful for that. That’s why this will drive him wild.

Moving on to number 2 which is...

“You’re so sexy”

A simple compliment but one that is often overlooked. You need your man to know that you find him sexually attractive and you need to remind him of that quite often if you want him to feel good. Don’t stop the compliment there. Let him know what it is about him that you find sexy, how he turns you on, and what you’d like to do to him later.

With any luck this is a compliment that can lead not just to the bedroom, but to a happier more fulfilling relationship for the both of you.

“You’re so sexy is an example of a physical compliment but also a value compliment because you’re letting him know how much you enjoy his body.

Let’s move on to our third compliment:

“You always know just what to say”

This compliment is both a competence compliment (meaning that you’re praising him for doing something well) and an effort compliment (because you’re praising him for making an effort).

Why this compliment succeeds is because it suggests to him that it’s something that you think about often and this compliment is calling back other times that he’s said just the right thing at the right moment. This is the kind of compliment that he’s going to be thinking about the next day when the two of you are apart and trust me when I say, he’s going to keep coming back for more of the same.
