Inauguration of the Mactan Cebu International Airport Terminal (Speech) 6/7/2018
Lapu-Lapu City, Cebu
June 7, 2018
President Rodrigo Roa Duterte graced the inauguration of the Mactan Cebu International Airport (MCIA) Terminal 2, the world’s ‘first resort airport’, in Lapu-Lapu City, province of Cebu.
Upon his arrival, the President unveiled the MCIA Terminal 2 marker and was given a tour of the facilities in the airport such as the Baggage Reclaim Hall, Customs Area, Immigration Area, Boarding Gates, Duty Free Philippines, Security Check Area, and the Immigration Area before proceeding to the program proper.
In his message, President Duterte lauded the splendid and world-class infrastructure of the MCIA Terminal 2 as this is the result of a fruitful partnership between the government and the private sector. He noted the interior design and artworks of the second largest airport in the country as these reflect the rich culture, warmth and hospitality of the Cebuanos.
Likewise, he commended the airport’s state-of-the-art facilities that he was able to observe during the walking briefing.
The President reiterated his administration’s drive against corruption in government and promised to pursue the ‘Build, Build, Build’ program nationwide for a more prosperous Philippines in the years to come.
Designed by Hong Kong-based Integrated Design Associates (IDA) and local designers Budji Layug, Royal Pinda, and Cebu’s pride Kenneth Cobonpue, the 65,500 square meter MCIA Terminal 2 will cater to inbound and outbound international flights and is expected to increase passenger capacity to 12.5 million yearly.
The airport showcases beautiful curved wooden roof arcs with layered glass to allow natural sunlight to seep through the terminal. This sunlight then reflects on the floor tiles containing mother of pearls found in Cebu to create a gentle glimmer similar to sand, thus representing the ‘resort-feel’ look of the airport.
Another feature of the MCIA Terminal 2 is its automatic tray return system (ATRS) that automatically returns empty trays to passengers so they can put their bags and other items for security check and screening.
In its concession agreement, the Mactan Cebu International Airport Terminal 2 is expected to begin actual operations on July 1, 2018.
