And so it was on Christmas day of the nineteen hundred and seventy five that one of the greatest heavy metal band of all time was formed. IRON MAIDEN, By bassist Steve Harris, having left his group SMILER. He got the band name from Alexander Dumas Novel The Man in the Iron Mask, reminding him of the TORTURE Device. The band would make their live debut in May of 1976 though the original line up evaporated quickly… They originally had Paul Day on vocals, who because of his lack of energy or charisma as Steve Harris would say, was replaced by Dennis Wilcock, who was a kiss fan and used some of their tricks during live shows.

After that Wilcocks buddy Dave Murray joined who would end up being the longest member outside of Harris. Maiden actually disbanded for a time before settling in with a solid lineup which would take some time as member would come and go , once having keyboards and then getting rid of them. Dennis Wilcock eventually left with Vocalist Paul Di Anno coming in…and upon releasing their demo the Soundhouse Tapes, the band started to gain some traction.
including classics like Twilight Zone/Wrathchild and the speed metal opus Purgatory, At this point Iron Maiden was on of the main instigators the the new wave of British Metal but their lead singer Paul Di’Anno’s substance abuse problems became crippling… leading to show cancellations and other issues. the self destructive behavior became too much for the band and Di Anno was sacked.. Enter one Bruce Dickinson. Dickenson auditoned for the band after being with the band Samson and was immediately brought on and after playing some show to introduce fans to their new direction, Iron Maiden released what may be their masterpiece…The Number of the Beast, becoming their first #1 album in the UK and made major inroads on the US charts where it hit #33 During that time the band faced some legal difficulties with Dickinson’s former band Samson’s management and Bruce Dickinson wasn’t able to receive writing credits on several of the songs that he was a major contributor to like Run to the Hills, Children of the Damned and The Prisoner. WE will cover a lot of Maiden in the future and I will do my best to get an interview with Bruce himself. but Today I want to focus on a track from Maiden’s forth album the first I read as a kid , Piece of Mind, A LITTLE HISTORY TO START
