📚1) I Promessi Sposi (The Betrothed) by Alessandro Manzoni. Usually read in high school, this book follows lovers Renzo and Lucia as they struggle to overcome the obstacles keeping them apart. Written in 1827 and set in the 1600s, the book is considered a masterpiece for its astute commentary on Italy's political and social climates.
📚2) Il Principe (The Prince) by Niccolò Machiavelli. High school and university students tend to study this classic political text. Macchiavelli uses all the insights he gained from being a diplomat to create a guide to help political leaders gain, keep, and use their power.
📚3) La Locandiera (The Innkeeper) by Carlo Goldoni. This story about a beautiful innkeeper Mirandolina and the two men trying to woo her is studied because it helped change Italy's theater scene to produce more work showcasing different social classes and everyday life.
