STORYLINE :
India hosted Russian President Vladimir Putin at the annual Republic Day parade in New Delhi on Friday amid high security.
The position of Chief Guest at the parade is an honour India reserves for its close allies.
Thousands of police, paramilitary and army soldiers were deployed to prevent attacks, amid calls for a boycott of the celebrations from groups that do not accept Indian sovereignty - militants in Indian administered Kashmir and ethnic militant groups in the remote northeast.
India's president A P J Abdul Kalam took the salute at the main parade in New Delhi.
Putin watched the parade with Abdul Kalam and Indian Prime Minister Manmohan Singh.
The parade included decorated floats from various Indian states, marching bands and performances by schoolchildren and folk dancers.
But the highlight was a display of India's military hardware, including tanks and artillery with fighter aircrafts overhead.
Leading the display were the Russian-built battle tanks equipped with laser-guided missiles.
Republic Day marks the anniversary of India's constitution, adopted in 1950, three years after British rulers left the Indian subcontinent after two centuries of colonial rule.
