Pulse Jet Engine / Rotating Detonation Engine Wannabe - For 25psi This Rotor Has Quite Some Torque

Hi everyone! So myself and Si had just waved off Ross and Martin who helped with the previous video which was a 2 stage supersonic test, we had set this up this experiment the previous night.

Here is the link to the supersonic 2 stage test https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ulrcGfAUNqo

The flaw in the current design is the Tesla valves need to be 1/3 - 1/4 of the current size. I estimated this from some flow tests me and Si did with a 2, 5 and 10 bar input for 5 seconds a time and using an anemometer to measure the wind velocity both ways.

As you would imagine, higher pressure resulted in bigger differences but none of the figures came close to Tesla's 1920 claims of 200 times+ the difference that I found today.

Therefore as the Tesla valves (aka valvular conduits) were traces of the original patent, the cross sectional area would be suited to a large system that could flow through a 3/8", 1/2"BSP fitting or bigger perhaps, rather than the current 1/4" BSP fitting.

The current valves although to big, do work for explosions but no where near as well with this long steel pipe to connect the exhaust to the turbine.

For your information, there is an extra hole 4mm inlet port hole on this volute casing so the machine can be ran in the direction it would as a volute pump to act as a starter motor.

This modification was to see if we could get it up to speed and then remove the temporary wooden block on the diverging 8-10mm exhaust hole and see if the inlet would pull a vacuum.

We didn't get fast enough due to the immense back pressure which are need to measure next time.

Strangely enough the bearings worked better with the heat, however the rotor has 250 micron sidewall gaps and we think the heat made the rotor kiss part of the casing which is why it slowed down at the end of the video.

We were getting lot of back pressure because the exhaust area of flow was small and the valves are not size matched, so the valves were getting super hot, which I've never seen before, as they stayed pretty cool in all my previous videos on the subject, apart from say the 1st 2 buckets area.

Changing the Tesla valves for 1/4 or 1/3 scale appears to be the way forward to get this faster and making vacuum. Put the centrifugal force to work for you rather than impede you!

If you make the speed fast enough and this will turn into a wind turbine on steroids. The propane is just to get the sucker going on atmopsheric pressure! It can be used as an afterburner too!

Because of the back pressure we barely had much super heated steam but there was some coming though which is why 25psi on a 2 disc 28mm rotor with 3mm gap can have decent torque at 60,000rpm. The boiler temps went over 225C and to be fair the Snap-On thermal imager wouldn't switch into the next range, so we don't actually know where it was between 250C and say 300 - 350C.

Interesting test though as highlighted loads of fairly cheap modifications to make it run properly.

Standby for an even simpler self-running version! Something I came up with in 2018.

What I do next is a variation of this using two volutes instead.

Basically put a well sized Tesla valve on the 2 stage supersonic setup inlet. The back pressure will allow the machine to run using atmospheric pressure when up to speed.

32psi back pressure at 234,000rpm will pump a Tesla valve hard and turn the centrifugal head back around and speed up atmospheric pressure which creates vacuum.

As Tesla writes about his technology in 1911:

"For if you can imagine a wheel rotating in a medium, whether the fluid is receiving or imparting energy, and moving at nearly the same velocity as the fluid, then you have a minimum of friction, you get little or no ‘slip.’ Then you are getting something very different from friction; you are making use of adhesion alone. It’s all so simple, so very simple."

This is a centrifugal / centripetal force mechanical torque amplifier using a Tesla turbine and a Tesla valve (aka valvular conduit). The heat is literally a starting mechanism or afterburner if you want more power. The valve is used to diode the flow and make centrifugal head work for you rather than against you.
