Serious Sam's Bogus Detour | #2 Public Library No. 1 - Serious 100%
Quite a difficulty spike when compared to previous level, devs aren't afraid of placing tough monsters and hordes of Kleers/Gnaars with spawners. The lighthouse arena is probably one of the harder fights in the entire game and it's the reason why I bought The Flashbang. My gameplay here wasn't the best and I used a health upgrade to heal myself, but at least I came out alive. The rest of the level after that is fairly easy, mostly just cleaning up the fodder.
That's another huge issue this game has - it's usage of repeating spawners. There are a lot of places where the same enemies spawn in same places over and over again, whether it's from teleporters, generators, holes or other spawn points. It's really tedious and makes it feel like playing a typical Sam custom map. These spawns don't increase the difficulty, they artificially increase the playtime and maybe give miniscule amounts of XP.
Every second level ends with a boss fight (because episodes are two levels long). Bosses in this game are difficult but very well made. This one however is quite simple. Just damage him with Laser during his first phase, when he starts sending reinforcements focus on them first and damage him second, on his third phase just throw everything at him, your weapons get taken away on the next level anyways. Stay close to the walls to get rid of his homing projectiles and dodge jump through his minigun attack.
One thing you might notice about this game is that a lot of things are random. Some star spawns are random, weapon placements might differ too, some enemies can spawn at different places at different times or not spawn at all, drops from crates and enemies are also random. This is an issue because:
1. You'll never be sure how many resources you'll have in a level
2. You'll never know how much XP you'll get
Look, some randomness is fine and can enhance subsequent playthroughs, but it gets really annoying when I have to restart the whole level because I didn't get enough XP, especially on Serious where upgrades are essential.
