The Chetniks in Yugoslavia during World War II

The Chetniks were a Serbian nationalist movement that emerged in Yugoslavia during the Second World War. The movement was led by Draža Mihailović, a Yugoslav army officer who had fought in the Balkan Wars and World War I. The Chetniks were initially formed to resist the occupation of Yugoslavia by Nazi Germany and its allies, and they received support from the Yugoslav government-in-exile in London.
However, the Chetniks soon became involved in a bitter conflict with the Partisans, a communist-led resistance movement led by Josip Broz Tito. The Partisans accused the Chetniks of collaborating with the Axis powers and committing atrocities against civilians, particularly against non-Serb minorities such as Croats, Muslims, and Albanians. The Chetniks, in turn, accused the Partisans of being a tool of the Soviet Union and of persecuting Serbs.
The conflict between the Chetniks and the Partisans intensified as the war progressed, and both sides committed numerous atrocities against each other and against civilians. In 1943, the Allies withdrew their support for the Chetniks and began to support the Partisans instead, viewing them as a more effective resistance movement. The Chetniks were eventually defeated by the Partisans in 1945, and Mihailović was captured and executed for war crimes.
The legacy of the Chetniks is a controversial topic in Serbia and the Balkans to this day. Some Serbs view them as patriotic heroes who fought for their country's independence, while others see them as collaborators with the Nazis who committed war crimes against civilians.
