Renouncing US citizenship is not usually the best move for most Americans, but for some, including those who live overseas and have a second passport and don’t plan on living in the US anymore - renouncing right now might be the best tax move. By far the top two reasons given for NOT expatriating are this. (1) A worry that they won’t be able to travel and visit the US anymore (we tackle this objection in the first 2 minutes) and (2) the emotional barrier to renouncing US citizenship.
We’ve helped thousands consider the implication of surrendering US citizenship, and even those who objective should find themselves from being unable to make the leap. In today’s podcast Immigration/Citizenship Attorney John Richardson has a novel way to think about relinquishing US citizenship.
"Think about it as retiring from the US tax system,” John jokes, but this joke does have a bit of truth to it.
Being a US taxpayer is a lot of work. Especially for those overseas. The filing requirements can be insane and the consequences of being a US person living under FATCA can be quite limiting.
The fact is, one can never escape their birth place - regardless of where they move. So the fact is regardless of current citizenship, an American will always be a American who can never upscale his or her Americanness. IF this is true, then why not look to expatriation? Thousands of Americans have done so, and with no meaningful relief in store for Americans overseas with their filing, the best time to renounce could e right now.
If you think you may be subject to the exit tax in 10 years, and you aren’t sure if you want to be a US person the best time to expatriate is now. Contact John to help you.
