Endoscopic Sleeve Gastroplasty (ESG): Suture and Procedure Durability - How Long Does it Last?

Endoscopic Sleeve Gastroplasty, or ESG, is an incision-less weight loss procedure that reduces the size of the stomach by 70-80% during a brief, same-day endoscopic procedure. ESG is performed with the Apollo Overtitch suturing device, which allows the physician to place "full-thickness" sutures from within, avoiding any external incisions or cutting.

The suture material is very strong, and unlikely to "break" over time. When performed correctly, the results are long-lasting.

In this video, Dr. McGowan of True You Weight Loss discusses the durability of ESG, as well as factors that might reduce the procedure longevity. Examples of correctly and incorrectly performed ESGs are reviewed.
