Visiting DURRËS | Historic City on the Adriatic Coast | Albanian Road Trip E6

DURRËS, ALBANIA: Travelling from Berat to the Albanian Riviera and exploring the resort-lined waterfront, large sandy beaches and historic old town of Durrës.

After a quick tour of my hotel room in Berat my Albanian road trip continues with a 90 minute drive to the resort city of Durrës on the Adriatic Sea. The drive would take me through numerous small villages and towns - where I caught a glimpse of rural Albania. Horses, carts, tractors and beat up old wagons filled the roads, children played football in the streets and farmers tended to their fields. It was incredible to see.

I stopped off at Durrës beach on route to the old town in the heart of the city. The sandy waterfront and resorts went on for as far as the eye could see and although a lot of the summertime attractions were closed it was still possible to take a wander down the beach and enjoy the atmosphere. There were still people swimming and enjoying the last of the summer.

After leaving the beach I headed into the old town of Durrës to learn a little about its history and explore some of the sights for myself. Lots of incredible architecture still remains, including a very well preserved Venetian tower, the ruins of a Byzantine castle wall and the largest Roman Amphitheatre in the Balkans. All of which are open to the public for a very reasonable price.

Walking deeper into the city I was able to see the Grand Mosque of Durrës built in the 1930's on the site of a former Ottoman era mosque and the Sheshi Liria Plac Centralny - a central plaza with tall palm trees and rows of fountains completing the spectacle.

After some dinner I drove back to Tirana to begin another adventure. So far I've thoroughly enjoyed my Albanian Road Trip, I've seen so many cool things I'm really pleased that I decided to hire a car and explore without a guide. Every last Albanian I met was super friendly and could not have been more helpful. Hopefully my travel vlog has highlighted that!
