Yorkshire Steam 2021 Part One - A day at 'The North Yorkshire Moors' Railway - Wednesday 19th May

2020 was the first year we had spent time away in North Yorkshire without it including any steam - our week at Blue Dolphin in July coming too early for either the NYMR to re-open or the regular 'Scarborough Spa Express' main line tours to start running again post the initial Covid-19 lockdown. We speculatively booked a week for May 2021 having no idea what the world would look like come 2021. Fortunately for us we booked to arrive on Monday 17th May - a date that would turn out to be the first day overnight stays permitted with another household - allowing our holiday to go ahead staying with my wife's parents. Also fortunately, while the 'Scarborough Spa Express' starts again on 27th May the North Yorkshire Moors Railway re-opened on Saturday 15th May just in time for our visit.

For the start of the season the NYMR is running their usual three train Bronze timetable of four Pickering to Whitby and two Pickering to Grosmont return trips, but with the addition of pre-booking on some to allow for social distancing. We visited on Wednesday 19th May and decided a day socially distanced on the trains with out four year old son wasn't wise so spent the day primarily at Grosmont visiting the Engine sheds and watching the trains, including lunch in the café and six trips to the shed shop to buy toys for our son! We also started the day lineside at Moorgates and ended by watching a couple of trains at Goathland in the middle of a cloud burst! In action was S15 no.825 and Black 5 no.44871 on the Whitby trains with Std 4 no.80136 on the Pickering to Grosmont trains with the first run of the day being behind the DMU no.101685.

We had a great day, thank you to all the staff and volunteers who worked so hard to get the line back open again it was great to see steam trains running through the glorious scenery once more.
