What is the AZAWAD Conflict in North MALI?

North Mali remains mired in conflict. But while attention is focused on the Islamic insurgency in the country, there is also an ongoing secessionist campaign by the Tuareg community centred on the creation of an independent state of Azawad. But just how likely is that we will ever see the emergence of a Tuareg state?

Hello and welcome! My name is James Ker-Lindsay. On this channel I take an informed look at International Relations with a particular focus on territorial conflicts, secession, independence movements and new countries.

The Tuareg people are spread over five countries in North and West Africa: Algeria, Burkina Faso, Libya, Mali and Niger. Since Mali became independent there have been a number of uprisings by the country’s Tuareg community, which is located in the sparsely inhabited north of the country. However, these rebellions have not usually been focused on secession. Instead, they has been about greater economic development and political autonomy. However, in 2012, the National Movement for the Liberation of Azawad (MNLA) unilaterally declared independence, proclaiming the Independent State of Azawad. While this was short-lived, and wholly unrecognised by the international community, the campaign for independent statehood continues. Although it receives little international attention, the Azawad conflict is ongoing. However, as this video shows, there are a number of forces lined up against Tuareg independence. As well as the Mali Government in the south and Islamist insurgents in the north, elements within the Tuareg community continue to favour greater autonomy within Mali over separate statehood.
