6201 Flies past Church Stretton; The Cathedrals Express 10-09-16
At the moment, a day where the plan goes to plan seems to be a very rare thing. For the third time in the last month, the plan went out the window before I even got down to the Marches, where 6201 was heading the Cathedrals Express from Bristol to Shrewsbury and back. In this case, the train I planned to get down to Craven Arms was cancelled due to one of the cab doors being faulty, which meant there was no way I would get to the shot at Stokesay in time for the outbound run passing (although watching the DMU fitter and the conductor try to close the door that wouldn't close was very entertaining).
Being 1 hour behind schedule, the only place I could get to in time was the platform at Church Stretton, although understandably this was very crowded with onlookers. All that could be heard for most of the shot was people talking even when 6201 was coming through the station so I didn't bother including it, as compared to the second shot it was poor.
As I was already at Church Stretton I was now an hour ahead of schedule, and the walk up to the top of Caer Caradoc Hill only took half an hour. I have had my eye on this shot for a couple of years but hadn't had a chance to use it until now. You can see all the way to Shrewsbury from the top, along with the final couple of miles of the 13 mile climb from there. Despite a 4 minutes late start from Shrewsbury, 6201 still managed to pass right on time after making a storming run even with the grade against the train and passed below the hill doing at least 55mph if not more and with no assistance from the rear. If the shot seems a bit dark, the sun kept going in and out; of course, typically, the sun stayed in for the entire duration of the shot and came out again 5 minutes later...
