China’s historical heatwave bakes Sichuan province, slows hydropower stations

A record-breaking heatwave in the summer of 2022 has been the longest sustained period of extreme temperatures recorded in China in six decades. Affecting about half of the nation’s land mass, the intense heat has been felt in many areas, including in the southwestern province of Sichuan, where it has dried up rivers, sparked wildfires and power shortages.
