When it comes to interesting chord progressions, you’re not going to want to skip the progression from Radiohead’s song, “Creep.” In this unique group of chord changes, the primary tonality is Major.
The harmonic direction jumps from Major to Mixolydian to Dorian. The flow of chords is also linear - taking advantage of a half-steps and quality shifts.
The first thing you want to do is make sure that you understand what the chord progression played in “Creep” actually encompasses. Because the progression is essentially divided into three zones, you will need to realize that one scale simply will not work to cover each section melodically.
The orientation of these chord changes begins with Major in measure one, but immediately shifts to Mixolydian in measure two. The third measure drifts back to Major.
However a quality shift to the parallel Minor occurs in measure four and calls for Dorian. It’s a roller-coaster ride to say the least, but the sound-scape created is well worth all of the harmonic twists & turns.
For those of you who enjoy working with this sound, it would be good to also check out songs like; “That’s When Your Heartaches Begin,” Elvis Presley, and the song “Space Oddity” performed by David Bowie.
