Some guitarists might tell you we only need 10 or 12 chords from open position to play a majority of the songs out there. I disagree. First of all, I don’t think anyone should limit themselves to learning a small collection of chords found in only one area of the neck. Secondly, there’s a movable chord shape that’s quick to develop and easy to apply in music - called the, “power chord.”
Power Chords are actually more like an interval rather than a qualified chord. They only have 2-notes and music theory tells us that in order to create a “true chord,” we must have three distinct tones, (the “Root, 3rd and 5th”). Power chords take the 3-note harmonic structure of true chords and remove the third, leaving us with only two notes, “the Root and the 5th.”
The power chord two note shape is easy to play and it sounds amazing when performed with over-drive on the amp. The simple Root and fifth interval also offers guitar players a lot of stylistic and tonal options musically.
Power chords are used in many styles and in songs that aren’t always in a “Rock” format. In fact, many acoustic players and those who perform with a clean tone use power chords. These styles include (but are not limited to); pop, blues, reggae, funk and country-western.
