Just recently, Brian Wang — a well-known analyst and futurist in the space community — dropped a long, detailed post breaking down the serious setbacks hitting both Blue Origin and ULA. Elon Musk saw it… and simply replied: “Space is hard.” Now, a lot of people thought it was just a classy show of sympathy — you know, a rival acknowledging that the other guys are having a tough time. But if you read between the lines… it was actually a pretty sharp, subtle burn. Why?
Because just recently, Blue Origin almost managed to convince everyone that they had beaten SpaceX at the reusability game.

They hyped up the successful booster landing on NG-3, using the same booster from NG-2. It looked like a big win. But the illusion didn’t last long.Even before the flight took off, CEO Dave Limp posted something very clever. He said, “We plan to use the engines we flew for NG-2 on future flights.”. The wording was smart. A lot of people who didn’t read carefully thought Blue Origin was fully reusing everything on this third New Glenn flight.In reality, only the empty metal structure and the outer frame came back for a second ride.

The real heart of the rocket, the seven BE-4 engines that produce 3.85 million pounds of thrust and decide whether the entire mission succeeds or fails, were brand new.It’s like bragging about reusing the same car body while swapping out the entire engine and transmission, then calling it “proven reliability.” If space is truly hard, like Elon Musk said, then why has SpaceX’s Falcon 9 successfully landed over 600 times with a near-perfect success rate? And they didn’t need any of these flashy tricks like replacing the whole powerplant. If space is hard, then why does SpaceX make crewed flights to the ISS look so routine?
